F1 Brazilian GP 2007

The Brazilian Grand Prix was always going to be exciting as all three title contenders were still in hunt for the ultimate prize this season. Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton of McLaren & Kimi Raikkonen of Ferrari were all set to go for one final time this season in an attempt to snatch the coveted driver’s championship title. Kimi had the most difficult of jobs, still 7 points behind the leader going into the last race while Lewis seemed only a few points away from becoming the first ever rookie world champion.

Everything seemed to go well for Lewis as he secured a front row place right alongside Massa in pole position. Kimi slotted into 3rd alongside Alonso. It all came down to whoever makes the greatest of start in the race but Kimi had the advantage of a team-mate playing for him whereas the McLaren team-mates were still fighting against each other for the title. As lights went off, Kimi made the most brilliant of starts as Massa blocked out Lewis which allowed Kimi to pass him easily. Lewis lost some momentum going into turn one and Alonso passed him as well.

Lewis looked ragged and performed the inevitable rookie mistake by trying to regain his place and lost further ground. The Ferraris meanwhile were on a charge leaving Alonso to do all the chasing. Lewis also suffered a 40-min gearbox failure which sent him all the way back across the grid. It was looking perfectly scripted for Kimi to win the race and a championship that he has always dreamt of. From having the minimal of chance, he was now the one looking most likely to clinch the title.

As the race went on, Kimi unveiled one ace after another and along with Massa, was truly the class of the field. By the second pit stop, Kimi delivered some of his magical laps in succession and erased any doubts of a possible team order. He was able to overtake Massa en route his way to 6th victory this season, two more than each of his McLaren rivals. Lewis had to suffer the shame of being lapped by mid-race and it must have been very difficult to digest for the rookie.

As Kimi crossed the line to take the checkered flag, the world knew they’ve got a new world champion and a deserving one. Massa played his team-mate role to perfection and Ferrari became the true constructor’s champion defeating McLaren by 1 point. There were more dramas to unfold and after 6 hours of deliberations, the FIA stewards have decided that the final results should stand as it is. McLaren, however, have appealed against the decision and we’ll soon find out if BMW or Williams are disqualified for a fuel temperature glitch. The full results are as follows -
